Artist Spotlight - Philip Webb

Philip (Pip) Webb is an artist inspired by life and nature, often expressing this through surreal imagery. He has been drawing and painting since childhood, studying Art at A level, but about 20 years ago a “Cloud Drawing” class at The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge was when everything clicked. He wasn’t drawing clouds, but life in the moment, spending three hours each week for a month capturing what he saw. This experience reignited his passion for the palette and brush. Soon after, he was commissioned for a few murals, began carrying paints when he traveled, and made a habit of sketching whatever caught his eye. Over time, he developed a distinctive style—perhaps the unconscious competence of painting freely—that allows him to relax and enjoy the process.
A career in the public sector has taken him to various places, and it was while based on the south coast, he joined a weekend sketching group and took an evening class at the University of Southampton, "Reflective Art in Practice: The Modern English Landscape," which began a period of active regular painting and visits to galleries which has continued in his current retirement in Cambridgeshire and Barnet and travels across Europe. He has taken classes at BGA in Acrylic landscape painting and regularly attends the Thursday morning Group and posting on Instagram.
