Visual Arts Newsletter By Dan

Hello fellow members of the Barnet Guild of Artists, I hope you’ve had an enjoyable artistic summer.

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the RA Summer Exhibition, where I discovered some fresh ideas and appreciated seeing works by artists I know personally. I also visited Hogarth’s House, which has free entry and a lovely collection of Hogarth’s prints. In July, I suggested a trip to Tate Modern to see The Blue Rider exhibition. Personally, I didn’t find this exhibition enjoyable, as I struggled to see the connections between the artists presented.

Exhibitions

The Tate, Royal Academy (Michael Craig-Martin), The Courtauld Gallery (Monet and London: Views of the Thames), The National Gallery (Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers), and others are offering exhibitions featuring renowned artists, albeit at a cost.

For this autumn, I recommend a couple of free exhibitions:

The Royal Watercolour Society will be holding their Autumn Exhibition from 4 October to 2 November. My teacher for the past few years, Paul Regan, will also be exhibiting at the RWS.

Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum: It Will End In Tears at the Barbican Centre features a series of 19 life-size dioramas. The paintings were commissioned for installation in The Curve.

Printmaking Exhibitions

Gwyneth Hibbett and Charlotte Staunton are exhibiting as part

of Southbank Printmakers mini print competition. Come and

The BBC has aired a series of programmes about drawing, including an interview with Maggie

Hambling, which isn’t the easiest to watch.

Desert Island Discs offers a wide variety of episodes featuring artists, including one with Tracey

Emin.

The autumn Autumn is the time for our own Barnet Guild of Artists exhibition, and I encourage everyone to participate. For more details, please refer back to our emails from barnetguildofartistsenquiries@gmail.com and ensure you register before 13 October.

And finally, please share with me your thoughts and suggestions at dan@dan-arts.com
